12 Years a Slave voted top movie for adults to watch

12 Years a Slave,” Judi Dench and Bruce Dern can add another honor to their resume: They’ve topped the list of Aarp’s annual Movies for Grownups awards, with “12 Years a Slave” being named best movie and Dench and Dern being honored for their roles in “Philomena” and “Nebraska” respectively.

The 17 categories also recognized the supporting roles of Oprah Winfrey in“Lee DanielsThe Butler” and Chris CooperAugust: Osage County,” as well as more unconventional categories like Best Intergenerational Film (“Nebraska,” again) and Best Movie for Grownups Who Refuse to Grow Up (“Saving Mr. Banks”).

The staff of Aarp The Magazine selected the winners based on their appeal to the “grownup” audience. They will be honored at Aarp’s annual gala on Feb. 10 in Los Angeles and in the magazine’s February/March issue.
